After a very successful opening week, we were delighted to welcome our first people through the doors of The Victoria Centre.
Opening a new day care centre is always a significant moment. There is the practical work of preparing the building, arranging furnishings, checking systems, planning menus, organising activities, and making sure the environment is safe, comfortable, and ready. But the real beginning comes when people arrive, sit down with a fresh coffee, start talking, and begin to make the centre their own.
Today gave us exactly that.
We have taken the opportunity to spend proper time getting to know the people who will be using our service. This is one of the most important parts of good day care. Before we can provide meaningful support, we need to understand the person in front of us. We want to know what they enjoy, what they have done in their life, what matters to them, what they prefer to avoid, and how they like to spend their day.
A day care centre should never feel like people are simply being placed into a timetable. The day should be shaped around the people attending.
One of the highlights today was supporting Ernie to begin make a model boat. It may sound like a small activity, but it quickly became much more than that. It led to a full conversation, memories, shared interests, and a chance for staff to learn more about the person. The model boat is not finished yet, but that is part of the value. It gives us something to return to, something to look forward to, and something that can grow over time.
These ordinary moments are often where the real benefit of day care is found.
After greetings, fresh coffees, conversation, and activities, it was time for a light lunch. Today we had a real treat. Peter, our owner and director, put on a smashing light lunch, which went down extremely well. Good food is a central part of the day at The Victoria Centre. It creates routine, brings people together, and gives everyone a chance to pause and enjoy time around the table.
Once lunch had been washed down with more drinks, we all took a breather and sat together for a chat. There was no rush. There was no pressure. Just a calm, friendly atmosphere, with people beginning to settle into the centre and staff beginning to understand how best to support them.
From a staffing and management perspective, we have also been making sure that all the necessary checks and balances are logged, audited, and kept under review. Families quite rightly want reassurance that a day care centre is not only friendly and welcoming, but also organised, safe, and well managed.
Behind the scenes, there is a lot of work that goes into running a service properly. This includes safe staffing, record keeping, risk management, food safety, medication considerations where relevant, communication with families, and making sure that each person’s needs and preferences are understood. These systems matter because they allow the relaxed and homely parts of the day to happen safely.
As we grow into our roles, we will also grow with the people we support. We know that no two people are the same. Some people may attend because they want company. Some may benefit from structure during the week. Some may be living with dementia or memory concerns. Some families may need a regular break, knowing that their loved one is somewhere safe, supported, and engaged.
Whatever the reason for attending, our focus is the same. We want people to feel welcome, respected, and involved.
The Victoria Centre is still at the start of its journey, but today felt like an important first step. We have welcomed our first people, shared food and conversation, started activities, and begun building relationships.
